Part 3 of 4: The 7 Trumpets

Equipping God's Saints (Followers of Christ) through the Prophecies of the End Times …

In our last lesson of the study of the Seven Trumpets, we learned that:
  1. The First Trumpet = World War I
  2. The Second Trumpet = World War II
  3. The Third Trumpet = Chernobyl Nuclear Accident

We are now going to study the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Trumpets. The Fifth Trumpet helps us to understand better the Fourth Trumpet, so we will start with the Fifth Trumpet, first.

The Fifth Trumpet is found in Revelation 9:1-2 and says:
“And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.”

Back in 1990/1991 Saddam Hussein, President of Iraq, decided he wanted to invade Kuwait. He wanted to take control of the oil riches of Kuwait. He felt that if he were able to take over Kuwait, he would be that much richer because he had dreams of rebuilding Babylon. He had actually launched an effort to rebuild the city of Babylon. He had pictures of himself taken with him standing in a chariot. He had a uniform made to look like Nebuchadnezzar back in the Old Testament in 586 BC when he destroyed Jerusalem. Saddam Hussein had dreams of destroying Jerusalem again and getting rid of the Nation of Israel. He felt if he could get the oil riches of Kuwait along with what he now controlled, it would enable him to have power and he would become the premier power of the Middle East.

When he invaded Kuwait in 1990, immediately, President George H.W. Bush went to the United Nations and asked for a resolution against Saddam Hussein. The UN passed the resolution and 29 member nations devoted either troupes or military supplies to the battle against Saddam Hussein driving him back out of Kuwait.

Hussein thought he had a green light from the United States of America to take this action, so because of this, he is very angry. He knows he is going to be forced out of Kuwait. He knows he cannot stand before the fire power of the United States of America and all of her allies, so he knows he is going to have to leave, but he's not going to go easy. He decides he will set 700 of the world's richest oil wells ablaze in Kuwait. When they began to burn, they actually blocked the sun and sky for over 3 months. The fires were so hot they would reach 2,000 degrees. For 3 long months these fires belched smoke into the atmosphere.

This is all so important because the prophecy says it. I don't know of one more incident in all of human history that could fulfill this particular prophecy. The Bible specifically says that the sun and the sky were darkened by reason of the smoke that came out of the bottomless pit. If the oil comes out of the earth, maybe that teaches us that the bottomless pit is in the middle of the earth.

Continuing the passage, Revelation 9:3, says:
“And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power”

Revelation 9:7-9 states:
“And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.”

Remember, this was written 2,000 years ago. What could John be referring to when he describes what he sees as locusts with breastplates of iron; with faces of men; the sound of their wings were the sounds of many chariots or many horses running to battle? Was he seeing helicopters? Was he seeing jet airplanes? All this was written in symbols. He had never seen a helicopter or a jet airplane. He had no clue what they were. He was seeing warfare in the 20th century, but describing with words he knew how to describe it with.

The prophecy continues in Revelation 9:11:
“And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.”

If you look up in the dictionary, it defines both the Hebrew 'Abaddon' and the Greek 'Apollyon', both meaning 'The Destroyer'. Some translations in the Bible actually say, “...they had a king over them named the Destroyer.”

The German Tribune newspaper dated March 10, 1991 had an article discussing Saddam Hussein and about all that was happening in the Gulf at the time. The reporter actually called him Saddam “The Destroyer” Hussein in the article.

In 1997, the Jerusalem Post published a human interest story about the last Jewish family out of Baghdad. The Jerusalem Post was doing an interview with this family who had just arrived in Jerusalem. What was interesting was how the lady who was relating the story said how when Saddam's mother was pregnant with Saddam, that she had a horrible pregnancy. The Iraqi doctors recommended an abortion. She did not want to get an abortion, so she moved to the section of Baghdad where the finest doctors were available. They were the Jewish doctors. The Jewisth doctors nursed her through her pregnancy with Saddam Hussein. Right in the Jerusalem Post it said she had decided to name him “Saddam” because Saddam means “Destroyer”. It was for all the pain the pregnancy had caused.

The prophecy in the Bible says a man by the name of Destroyer (Saddam Hussein) is going to unleash the oil fields (the bottomless pit) and the sun and the sky will be darkened by reason of the smoke. There are still a couple of things in the prophecy I do not understand yet, but there is too much here for me to deny. So I have reached the conclusion that the Fifth Trumpet sounded in 1991.

Next, we will discuss the Fourth Trumpet.
